We are fortunate in Québec to have a diverse artistic community. A musician from a very young age, violinist Véronique Turcotte is one of our local artists. While her classical training led her to work with the Gatineau Symphony Orchestra, her jazz and pop skills opened opportunities to create with notable artists such as Michel Normandeau, Pierre Côté, and Guy Boisvert. Véronique's career is a testament to her accomplished musicianship.
In 2022, the musician revealed a new facet of her creativity. The release of her first solo album, A Mile in My Shoes, features arrangements of well-known pieces and original compositions. Accompanied by Pierre Côté on guitar and Guy Boisvert on upright bass, Véronique Turcotte performs as both a violinist and jazz singer!
The album begins gently with “Here Comes the Rain Again”, whose arrangement is representative of the artist's vision for her album: reshaped into something more intimate and personal. Unlike the original piece, which used new synthesis technologies of the 1980s, Véronique offers us a hushed, sensitive, and refined acoustic version. The very first notes of the upright bass line envelop the listener in a warm atmosphere, maintained as the guitar and vocals come in to present the melody we know so well.

The second track on the album, “Perdus dans le même décor”, is a song by Jim Corcoran, one of Véronique's influences. The Brazilian rhythms woven into this ingenious arrangement quickly lull the listeners as they revisit this well-known tune from Quebec pop culture.
Véronique demonstrates her versatility in several styles, from swing and bossa nova to funk. “Avec les mains” offers us an equally cozy and warm atmosphere, but this time with a confident, funky groove that knows how to grab your attention!
The album's title track, “Mile in My Shoes”, perfectly reflects the album's identity. Jazzy, sentimental, both peaceful and tense, carefully chosen notes materialize the blues of life, complementing the message that Véronique sings: self-acceptance and emancipation from the gaze of others. The lyrics of this composition highlight a pivotal moment in any artistic journey, regardless of discipline. While an artist showing self-acceptance understands the nuances their creativity brings to the audience, freeing themselves from the gaze of others allows the artist to create freely, in peace.
An album to savor...
Altogether, ''A Mile in My Shoes'' is, without a doubt, an album to add to your playlist! It is a collection of nuanced tunes, creatively arranged, putting forward Véronique Turcotte's sensitivity and creativity. Available on Bandcamp and streaming platforms, you can now enjoy this music, rich in texture, contemplative in nature, and deeply sensitive. Happy listening!
